How real are reality shows

The high voltage drama on the reality shows such as an ugly verbal spat between two fellow contestants often forces us sitting on the other side of the screen to think is everything scripted or real? Are all these done to get high TRPs to get the audience glued to the TV screen or is everything real? The answer is obviously with the producers of the show and it is quite obvious that if you ask any one of them about the content of the show the answer will be “it is 100% real”.

To me, it is a very clever combination of a well scripted and a bit of reality diluted together and is portrayed to the audience in a manner that makes them believe that the reality shows is real. This week as I was watching one of the most popular Television reality shows on TV, BIG BOSS 7, I was stunned by the eviction of one of the contestants. There was no logic behind the elimination of that particular contestant. This is a very clear indication that the producers of the show certainly want to show the heated arguments between the rest of the contestants. Well, before proceeding further let me mention here that the particular contestant who was evicted was less violent and aggressive in comparison to the other contestants.

From the eviction it was very clear that the makers of the show certainly want to keep the entertainment factor alive by showing the frequent heated arguments between the rest of the contestants. If we look from another angle, it is quite logical and is right from the producer’s point of view but terming a show as real means showing and doing things that are real. Merely, eliminating contestants without a strong reason reduces the reality factor in the show.
